In celebration of National Poetry Month, and in recognition of Beautiful & Pointless: A Guide to Modern Poetry, the new book by New York Times poetry columnist David Orr, Housing Works presents a critical discussion of poetry in the broader culture. How do we talk about poetry in front of general readers in a way that respects both the audience and the art? Is that even possible? Several of New York’s most prominent critics and editors discuss poetry’s fraught relationship with the concept of popularity. With moderator Sam Tanenhaus (Editor of The New York Times Book Review) and Robyn Creswell (poetry editor, The Paris Review), Dwight Garner (book critic, The NewYork Times), Laura Miller (senior writer, Salon.com), David Orr (poetry columnist, The New York Times Book Review), Tree Swenson (director, Academy of American Poets).
